Amid discussions with administrators of troubled retailer Wilko, the GMB union has disclosed that the majority of its stores are poised to close within the next week, prompting a wave of impending redundancies. The GMB, representing over 3,000 of Wilko’s 12,500 employees, unveiled that the once-prominent high street chain is preparing to announce a series of job cuts as a result of its recent plunge into administration.

Wilko’s future became uncertain when it entered administration a fortnight ago, casting doubts over the fate of its 400 stores. Administrators from PwC swiftly solicited offers from potential buyers in a bid to salvage jobs and stores. However, the GMB union has now reported that a meeting revealed “no longer any prospect” for rescuing the majority of the business, paving the way for imminent redundancies across store and call center staff.

Although certain stores could potentially be acquired individually or as part of larger deals as part of the insolvency process, the union disclosed that the likelihood of such measures saving the majority of the business is slim. Rival retailers like Poundland, B&M, The Range, and Home Bargains were reportedly among the interested parties eyeing portions of the Wilko enterprise.

The perspective from the GMB union is that its members’ interests should be safeguarded throughout this process, emphasizing consultation in line with legal requirements and full entitlements for affected individuals. Andy Prendergast, GMB’s national secretary, voiced the union’s commitment to ensuring accountability on the part of Wilko’s leadership, highlighting the dissatisfaction with the management decisions that led to this situation.

The news of impending closures and redundancies has generated concerns about the broader impact on high streets across the country. The Labour party underscored the substantial repercussions this development would have, attributing it to what it considers 13 years of economic mismanagement under the Conservative government. Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds acknowledged the dedication of Wilko’s staff and proposed Labour’s strategy for revitalizing high streets. This plan includes addressing obstacles such as business rates, tackling anti-social behavior, and addressing vacant premises to revive local shopping hubs.
