The aftermath of Brexit led to a period of intense negotiations between the UK Government and Spanish authorities, focused on clarifying regulations surrounding driving licenses. Earlier this year, new guidelines were introduced, permitting drivers to swap their UK-issued driving licenses for Spanish equivalents. The primary aim was to enable motorists to continue driving in Spain without the necessity of undertaking a Spanish driving test.

Nonetheless, changes are on the horizon for holders of UK driving licenses in Spain. Starting from the 16th of March, 2023, British residents in Spain will be allowed to drive using a valid UK or Gibraltar license, extending until the 15th of September. It’s important to note that this arrangement is temporary and was established through mutual agreement between the UK and Spanish authorities.

People who were residing in Spain before the 16th of March, 2023, can use their UK license until the 16th of September, 2023, but afterward, they will need to exchange it for a Spanish license. Renewing or replacing UK, Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey, or Isle of Man driving licenses is not possible for UK expatriates in Spain, as indicated on the GOV.UK website.

The Brits in Spain Facebook group, boasting over 86,000 followers, has been consistently reminding drivers about the license changes. The group has emphasized that adherence to the license advice is crucial to avoid potential issues. The message is clear: individuals who were residing in Spain before March 16, 2023, can only rely on their UK license until September 16, 2023. To continue driving legally in Spain, they must promptly exchange their UK license for a Spanish one.

For those relocating to Spain after March 16, 2023, the allowance is to use a valid UK or Gibraltar license for six months following residency acquisition. During this timeframe, the Government advises drivers to initiate the process of converting their UK-issued license to a Spanish one.

British Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, conveyed this message during a Facebook Live session, stressing the importance of prompt action. He encouraged drivers to utilize the Brits in Spain Facebook group for dissemination and consult the Living in Spain Guide on the GOV.UK website for further guidance.

Lastly, it’s crucial to note that an International Driving Permit (IDP) cannot be used as a substitute for a Spanish license, as explicitly stated on the GOV.UK website.
