The Football Association is contemplating Sarina Wiegman as a prospective successor to Gareth Southgate for the role of the next England men’s football team manager.

Under Wiegman’s guidance, the Lionesses have evolved into an unstoppable force, showcasing their prowess since she assumed the position, succeeding Phil Neville before the triumphant European Championship campaign last summer. Following their historic victory over Australia in Sydney, only Spain stands between Wiegman and the title of World Cup champions this Sunday.

While Wiegman is contracted with the FA until 2025, she is poised to emerge as a prominent contender to assume the reins from Vlatko Andonovski as the coach of the US Women’s National Team. Andonovski’s departure came after their World Cup round of 16 exit at the hands of Sweden.

As for Southgate, he is on track to lead England into his fourth major tournament next summer in Germany, aiming to surpass their achievement from two years ago when they narrowly lost to Italy in an epic final, decided by penalties.

The future of Southgate’s role after the Euros remains uncertain. The FA’s CEO, Bullingham, acknowledged Wiegman’s potential and emphasized that gender should not limit opportunities in football leadership roles. Bullingham stated that the focus should be on selecting the best person for the job, regardless of gender.

Bullingham expressed confidence in Wiegman’s capabilities and highlighted that she could excel in various aspects of football, even if she decides to transition to the men’s game at some point in the future.

Ultimately, the emphasis lies on merit, and Bullingham rejected the notion that gender should determine suitability for high-profile positions. He noted that while the talent pool for major national roles might be limited, both in terms of men and women, the focus should remain on competence rather than preconceived gender biases.
