Marcus Rashford has reaffirmed his belief that his optimal position within Manchester United’s attack is on the left side, rather than centrally. In Monday’s Premier League opener against Wolves, the English forward faced difficulties in asserting his influence under Erik ten Hag’s leadership. United’s attacking rhythm appeared disrupted in the narrow victory, secured by Raphael Varane’s second-half header.

The absence of summer signing Rasmus Hojlund, intended for a central role, unsettled United’s attacking equilibrium. Anthony Martial’s ongoing fitness struggles further compounded the challenge; he could only feature as an unused substitute. Consequently, Rashford found himself as the lone senior option for the central attacking position, while Alejandro Garnacho and Antony occupied less-favored roles on the left and right flanks, respectively. This configuration was not the preferred setup for either the player or the club.

This match underscored the significance of Hojlund’s acquisition and illuminated a potential concern for the season. Martial’s inconsistency in availability could pose a problem if he serves as the primary backup to the Danish international. Against Wolves, the opposition managed to withstand United’s attacking threat, partially due to Rashford being out of his favored left-wing position. His trademark move of cutting inside onto his right foot and pressuring defenses was hindered in this central role.

During a conversation on The Overlap with Gary Neville earlier in the summer, Rashford had been unwavering in identifying his strong position as the left wing. When questioned further about his preference for that flank over a central role, he explained, “Left-wing allows for better involvement throughout the game. Since my youth, I’ve yearned to actively participate. This is why playing center-forward presents challenges for me due to the patience it demands. You might go lengthy spells without touching the ball, and then suddenly, your first touch becomes a scoring opportunity. It necessitates sharp mental focus. Though I initially didn’t relish this aspect, my perspective has evolved as I’ve matured, and I now find enjoyment in operating up top.”
