£5.7M Levelling Up Road Transformation: Progress Update and Upcoming Milestones
£5.7M Levelling Up Road Transformation: Progress Update and Upcoming Milestones

The £5.7 million initiative commenced at the bustling roundabout in May and is anticipated to conclude by mid-December. Coun Richard Davies, in charge of highways, remarked on the progress of the first two ‘Levelling Up’ endeavors, indicating they are proceeding satisfactorily. In fact, both projects have now surpassed the halfway mark. Since initiation in May, the team has broadened the western section of the roundabout where it connects to the northbound A16. Moreover, new curbing equivalent to almost two football pitches has been installed, along with twenty fresh street lighting columns.

Additionally, significant achievements include the modernization of the traffic signals at the Marsh Lane / Wyberton Low Road intersection, transforming all legs into Toucan crossings. This intricate task involved the installation of nine new signal heads, complete with overhead detection, tactile paving, and fifteen underground chambers. BT Openreach has also been on-site, realigning a quarter-mile of their subterranean services to align with the new roundabout and road layout.

The project highlights up to this point include:

  1. Installation of a quarter-mile of new subterranean street lighting conduits.
  2. Usage of over 1,000 tonnes of road construction materials for carriageway expansion and nearly 200 tonnes for a new shared footway/cycleway.
  3. Incorporation of fifteen novel drainage gullies.
  4. Construction of five fresh underground Openreach chambers.

Coun Davies remarked that with the halfway point surpassed, the forthcoming tasks encompass resurfacing the road, necessitating some overnight closures. The exact dates and times of these closures are yet to be finalized but will be promptly shared. The subsequent focus will be on widening the eastern side of the roundabout and advancing the enhancements to active travel routes near Wyberton Low Road.

The forthcoming traffic management measures encompass:

  1. Closure of Wyberton Low Road for four evenings, starting Tuesday 8 August, from 7pm to 7am.
  2. Implementation of temporary traffic signals on Marsh Lane for four evenings, starting Monday 14 August, from 7pm to 7am, to conduct trial excavations for locating gas and water infrastructure.
  3. Temporary traffic signals and convoy operation on Marsh Lane during weekends from September to October, from Saturday evenings to Monday mornings (precise dates pending confirmation), for road resurfacing.
  4. Closure of the A16 from mid-October to mid-November for the final road resurfacing.
  5. Southbound closure on London Road for footway expansion from mid-November to mid-December.

It’s worth noting that ongoing traffic management entails lane closures and temporary traffic signals as required on the A16, Marsh Lane, and Wyberton Low Road.
