Costco, the wholesale warehouse chain, has ambitious plans to establish 14 additional stores across the United Kingdom within the next two years. The company is actively scouting potential locations nationwide in collaboration with property development firm Chase Commercial. While Costco aims to expedite the openings, certain launch timelines might be adjusted if acquisition processes extend beyond initial expectations.
To fulfill their expansion goals, Costco is seeking prime sites spanning six to 12 acres, enabling the construction of 150,000 sq ft buildings accompanied by 650 parking spaces. Moreover, the company intends to include facilities for petrol filling stations and electric vehicle charging points. While the following locations are under consideration for new warehouses, no official confirmations have been made yet:

- Chelmsford
- South Glasgow
- South East Londo
- Wolverhampton / North West Birmingham
- Colchester
- Exeter
- Oxford
- Brighton
- Portsmouth
- Preston
- South West Birmingham
- Cambridge Maidstone
Chase Commercial’s Director, Justin Parker, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Costco Wholesale UK to introduce more warehouse clubs across the country.
For those unfamiliar, Costco operates as a bulk retail store, offering its own branded products known as Kirkland. A distinguishing feature of Costco is its membership-based shopping model, where access to the stores requires membership.
Membership eligibility is exclusive; individuals must be current or retired employees in specific fields like banking, finance, medicine, civil service, or education. Online shopping is accessible to all without job-related prerequisites. Online-only membership starts at £15 annually, while access to physical warehouses costs £33.60 per year for individual members.
Trade memberships cater to businesses, beginning at £26.40 per year. Each membership package includes a complimentary membership card for partners and cohabiting individuals.
Notably, Costco recently announced plans for a new establishment in Gloucester, set to be located on a vacant plot along Eastern Avenue in the city. The public opening date for this site is yet to be confirmed.
Presently, Costco operates 29 stores across the UK. The proposed addition of 15 new stores, including the upcoming Gloucester site, would elevate the total count to 44. The Mirror has reached out to Chase Commercial for their perspective on the matter.
