British travelers are being cautioned about potential fines of €200 (£171) for violating a newly implemented regulation in Spain’s Costa Blanca area. In Torrevieja, tourists could face penalties if caught purchasing goods from unlicensed street vendors, marking a stricter enforcement approach. Torrevieja, a favored tourist spot among Britons, is a prominent resort city within the Alicante province.

The City Council has initiated a fresh campaign to notify vacationers of the potential fines linked to possessing counterfeit merchandise. Unlicensed street vendors, often found selling items on blankets along the streets, typically offer products like sunglasses, hats, and clothing.

Federico Alarcon, responsible for police, security, and emergencies, emphasized that this measure is an incremental advancement in their ongoing efforts. In the past, the focus was mainly on targeting unlicensed vendors and confiscating counterfeit items. The campaign, advertised on both social media and local establishments, features information presented in both Spanish and English.

Alarcon emphasized that the objective of the campaign is to educate tourists who might be unaware that they are engaging in unlawful activities. These unlicensed vendors often approach tourists sunbathing on the beach or those enjoying outdoor drinks at bars. Additionally, tourists should be mindful of various atypical laws in Spain, such as a prohibition on urinating in the sea in certain northern regions.

In the Balearic islands, tourists are prohibited from participating in booze cruises or availing “all you can drink” offers in specific areas, including Magaluf. The implementation of these restrictions in Magaluf has led to some discontent among hotel owners, as it has prompted tourists to explore alternative resorts.
